Day 4 - Friday, Oct. 17 - Drizzly Day in Anif

Another very "slow" day. Fantastic breakfast - always one of the highlights at Friesacher. There are numerous stations featuring cheeses, meats, breads, cereals, fruits, sweets, juices, cooked-to-order eggs, and even Champagne. The semmeln (roll) are the best we've ever had - lightly crispy on the outside and soft, melt-in-your mouth inside. One never needs lunch after such a hearty breakfast!

Jams, etc. - We love the rooster (very similar to ours from France)

Our afternoon outing was about 1-mile to the MaxiMarket in Anif. It had changed amazingly since our last visit a couple years ago. It had been a fairly ordinary supermarket, and now it is bright and modern with incredible selections of fresh produce, hundreds of cheeses, and maybe thousands of sausages. We were even able to purchase The International NY Times (formerly The International Herald) - which is rather expensive at 3 EU (about $4). We are sorry there doesn't seem to be one of these stores in Vienna!

We had planned to take the bus into old Salzburg (avoiding parking hassles) to wander and to go to a special place to buy Marillen (apricot) schnapps. Everyone says they make the best, and Ron agrees. But it was a wet, gloomy day and we ended up staying in and enjoying being in our beautiful hotel.

In the evening we walked over to the Heuriger (wine tavern) owned by the Friesacher family. A heuriger typically serves "new" or "young" wine (the year's harvest). We have been visiting for years, and even took my parents there in 1973. You choose your food from a glass display case. Much of the food served throughout the complex comes from the Friesacher's own farm. I had delicious peppeppers stuffed with goat cheese, artichoke hearts, and a piece of fried chicken. Ron had a large salad, soup, and ribs.

We stopped in one of the hotel bars for a nightcap - hating to see the end to a delightful day.
